With Barnabas, there were always times when he wasn't a vampire, and when he
struggled against his condition. In Valley of Silence, Nora Roberts resolves
the problem rather nicely. Some may say it was contrived, but not really, when
you consider the whole series. Christine Fehan's Carpathians aren't exactly
the same as vampires. They follow a strong code of conduct. One thing nice
about fantasy is that a writer can make up her own rules, as long as they are
internally consistant, and she sticks to them, or has a logical explanation for
breaking them. Some of the novels out there glorify evil more than I would
like. More accurately, they fail to balance it with the good, but I'm getting
too opinionated, here; so had better quit.
