hear, hear. I like your perspective on the matter. I often find that pointing out the absurdity of their remarks useful.

Instead of getting upset when someone says........it's over here.......when I ask the location of something, I either say......Lily, it's I*over there* in a bright, encouraging tone and the person who gave me that oh-so-helpful direction will stop and say, now the dog doesn't know where *over there is* and I smile sweetly and say,

"Neither do I".

DUH!

What new DAISY?

What amazed me was that the person who said it did not notice how ridiculous s/he was.In this case especially since I wanted to attend a Zen meeting [? session? what do you call them?] to learn more. My sister the Zen B. Priest was incensed but I was just annoyed that I could not go and that the people at a Zen center could be that unfriendly as well as that stupid. And, I admit, I was amused which is often my reaction to stupidity.

At least I learned one thing from the episode and my sister's response. Anger raises the blood pressure and on that level accomplishes little. Now Jim and Benetech are an intelligent answer to a problem and relieves the blood pressure and solves at least some of the problems of more than one type of disability. Now if we could only find a solution for the unaffordability of many programs available to the disable but which only organizations like Voc. Rehab can afford. Daisy is one such answer and I am hoping the new Daisy will work on my computer since the current one won't.

How pray tell do you not go with the chair while it stays outside?

That is rediculous.

Debra,

To add to the mountains to climb list (or sometimes people just don't
think): If I am going somewhere I have never been I usually call ahead to find out if it is accessible and on this occasion the secretary said yes, if I could manage 3 steps. Now I know there are wheelchairs that do steps but they are still rare and mine doesn't. I have also been told I was welcome at a temple [Buddhist, in this case] if I could leave the chair outside. I cannot help but wonder if the answers would have been the same if they saw
me but maybe that would not have made a difference.

I so admire those of you who have had the courage to go on to higher
education. Things were difficult when I received my Batchelor's degree, and the thought of going after more education which I thought I would do seems
absolutely overwhelming to me. I think in many ways, it would be easier
than it was nearly forty years ago, but hitting those snags would challenge
me for more fighting power than I feel I have at this point in my life.

I wish all of you who are pursuing advanced degrees the very best. You
have lots of courage to go for it.

Grin, I'm not whining about it; it just aggravates me no end when ppl
whine about why they can't do their jobs or tell why it would be easier
if I would just do it *their* way.

I spent two hours explaining to the coordinator of disability services
why I couldn't use a pdf copy of the book she had dutifully scanned
because the publishers wouldn't provide me with a word version.

I spent more time fighting the access mountain than I did learning.

Hey it is normally the challenge of all the blind students at a college,
not
just you. Smile.

Believe me, I had a difficult time getting my masters.

Zaria is my first Leader Dog and Lily is my second.

My first master's degree is in School Psychology and the second is in
Counseling & Guidance. They are related fields but in Texas, you can't
practice psychology without supervision or bill
Medicaid/Medicard/insurance.
I'm going to be practicing as a grief and bereavement counselor at a
hospice
inpatient unit.

I've had no end of difficulties with this master's since accessibility
has
been an ongoing problem with books and WebCT and online sites., probably
due
to the fact that I don't "do" things like the *other* blind students at
our
campus. I'm not quite blind enough or deaf enough, lol.

As for being interesting?

Bah humbug <vbg>

Zaria (what a pretty name!).

What are you getting your second Master's in, and what
is your first one in?

We have such interesting people on this list--all
kinds of interests and jobs, present and former.

second master's provides me
with the income to satify my book fetish.
