The Book Port will format based on the card. So, if you have a 4 gig, you'll get FAT 32. If it's less, you'll get 16. It's not supposed to be necessary, but it's a good idea. and since it takes a maximum of maybe twenty seconds to do it with a 4GB card, it really doesn't hurt to just take the time to do the format.
