Hi Cindy,
Setting indentations doesn't stick. People choose within their
daisy readers whether they want indentations at the beginning of paragraphs,
or a double line space. All lines following a hard return are indented in
braille. Putting The first word of each indented line in all caps would
work, but only if no other words are in all caps for any other reason at the
beginning of lines.
I do admit that seeing the dashes might be annoying, but I don't
know of another solution for this problem. In braille they can easily be
skipped over. With speech how much punctuation is spoken can eliminate
having to hear them, and the reader can search for them when he/she so
chooses.
Another little possible hitch. A braille line, in many cases is
limited to forty characters. For this reason, I'd change my previous
recommendation that all indented lines be preceded by dashes equal to the
number of spaces the lines are indented. I think this would be a good idea
if the poem has shape, as in the case of the sword that you mentioned, so
that the shape is maintained. However, in the books that I've looked at,
sometimes blocks of text is offset to the right in just that blocks, or as
single lines. In those cases, I think the amount of indentation isn't as
important as the fact that the indentation exists. In such cases, I'd think
that preceding these lines as a matter of course with (perhaps) four dashes
would be sufficient.
I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you are willing to take on
this book! I have wanted to read this author's work since I was first told
about her, but am completely unwilling to read them in any form that
sacrifices the form of the poetry. It's important! I have tried many
options for scanning and recognition myself, but discovered, sadly, that I
can't do this work justice without the help of a sighted person.And, if,
after you finish this one, and you aren't either ready to tear your hair
out, or totally frustrated or discouraged, I have four other books by this
author that I'd love to see made a part of the Bookshare collection and
would be THRILLED to scan!
I know that this book will be a LOT of intensive work! And I, for
one, truly appreciate your willingness to do what is necessary to preserve
the form of the poetry!
If you have any other questions, please, feel free to contact me
either off or on the list and I'll either clarify anything I've made a hash
of in this note, or help you brainstorm other solutions that will preserve
the poetry and maybe lessen the amount of work you have to do, while still
preserving the poetry's form.

I must admit that I don't understand why setting the margins doesn't work.
Making first lines indented works, or doesn't it?
I did plan to use the hard return at the end of lines and asterisks between
the verses. I was thinking of setting the margins initially, or first lines
indented at 5 and then the words that are at the left-hand margin flush
left. Or making the word that's at the left-hand margin Bold or caps and on
a line by itself. If you think neither will work I'll use the dashes, but
isn't that annoying, or can Braille and Daisy be set to ignore them?
