Mike, thanks for the info about the 4180.

As to my time spent editing before submission being more with the 
black-and-white than the if I used the grey -- I experimented with both and 
actually found little difference. Occasionally if a black-and-white scan of a 
page was *really* bad, I rescanned with the gray -- but the problem was usually 
that I hadn't pressed down hard enough in the first place. Maybe I'd been 
distracted. Since I don't hear the scan like some of you do, I find it boring 
and I find that my mind sometimes wanders. Even though I write down the pages 
I've done, if I'm interrupted or just not paying enough attention -- or 
whatever reason -- I've found that on occasion I've rescanned the same set of 
pages and missed the set I was supposed to do. Fortunately, I don't return my 
books to the library until I've finished pre-validating and submitted the book.
