Mike, thanks for the info about the 4180. As to my time spent editing before submission being more with the black-and-white than the if I used the grey -- I experimented with both and actually found little difference. Occasionally if a black-and-white scan of a page was *really* bad, I rescanned with the gray -- but the problem was usually that I hadn't pressed down hard enough in the first place. Maybe I'd been distracted. Since I don't hear the scan like some of you do, I find it boring and I find that my mind sometimes wanders. Even though I write down the pages I've done, if I'm interrupted or just not paying enough attention -- or whatever reason -- I've found that on occasion I've rescanned the same set of pages and missed the set I was supposed to do. Fortunately, I don't return my books to the library until I've finished pre-validating and submitted the book.
