Ditto Tiffany's comment. I had to be told, but it's true -- the lid is just to keep the platen from getting dusty. You have to press the book down, especially at the spine, firmly -- not so hard as to possibly crack the glss but pretty firmly. You'll get the hang of it with practice. If it's not held down firmly enough your scan will have lots of errors -- possibly be unreadable. If held down and the distinction between thype and page are good, you'll get a pretty good clean scan. Also, some people recommend the grey setting (I think that's waht it's called) rather than the black-and-white. I don't like it because it's much slower and I'd rather fix errors after scanning than wait for the slow scan. Let us know, please, how you like the 4180. I understand scanners wear out after a while, and while I hope mine won't, especially since now I'm scanning less and validating more, I'd thinking ahead in case I have to replace it.
