Since I am not a SAC member I really cannot say much, but this is
announced in Az-Observing which, although a SAC group it is open to
non-SAC Members, and so I will supply a few comments.

1. Do we need another group? Az-Observing seems to serve the purpose well.
2. A few years back I started a group called SW-Astrophysics. It is a
yahoo group that covers the SW US, particularly Arizona. Because it is a
yahoo group members could upload files and photos. I announced it in
Az-Observing, but hardly anyone joined.
3. I do not consider being able to upload photos and files to something
owned by yahoo particularly a big advantage. I would want to read the
fine yahoo print. I suspect it reads something to the effect that they
own anything uploaded to their servers belongs to them. Most, maybe all,
internet providers provide space for their customers to set up web sites
or put photos and files. Then, like I do, the customer can provide a
link to a photo or file. The advantage of this is that one does not have
to log in to yahoo to see it. or belong to a yahoo group to see it, and
anyone can access it. Even someone who is not a member of Az-Observing
could access it if the link was provided to them.
4. I have not observed that rowdiness in Sac-forum or Az-Observing has
been a problem. Once in awhile things start up, but quickly end.
Everyone is pretty well behaved. So, I do not see that moderating is
particularly an advantage for a yahoo group. The problem with yahoo is
that groups automatically set up the *concept* of a moderator.
Consequently, if someone ends up taking over the group and abuses
his/her or her/his moderating powers, they could create problems and
even end up extinguishing someone's interest in astronomy.
5. I belong to one yahoo group (those who are members will know which
group I am talking about) which conducts surveys and polls to the death.
I am sick of them. So, being able to conduct polls and surveys is no
particularly advantage to me. If something is really important, it gets
out. If it is too easy to do polls and surveys, then they become too
prolific.
6. I do not see that spammers has been a problem in Sac-forum or
Az-Observing.

My sour puss opinions.
Stan
