The point is that it doesn’t matter. For most any amateur purpose the
impurities are irrelevant.

We've done exactly that. Theoretically the stuff is adulterated so you
cannot inhale it, but it has no smell and leaves no residue.
The question, alas, is whether that experience generalizes to other N2O
suppliers. People's experience with denatured ethanol has been that the
composition is not standardized -- the type and quantity of denaturant added
varies -- and the same might be true of N2O.
