Different distributors may be using differ definitions. The only difference
between FDA food grade and medical grade is the valve handle. The medical
grade uses a rubber covered handle to prevent gloves from getting nicked.
Hot Rod grade is putrefied and if you're doing anything with a catalyst, it
can mess it up. Industrial grades are standard bottles with standard assays
within a wider range (including contaminants such as rust) and are not
approved for food or medical use. UHP grades are exactly that and can be
supplied with an assay certificate. If you're just squirting it into the
head end of a salami, you won't see any change in performance with any of
the grades.
If you ware looking for performance, you may be able to find a dealer who
will label CO2 Dewars for N2O and sell it to you as an unpressurized
cryogenic. The properties of both materials are similar in these regards and
some of the distributors have customers that buy it this way. Load up your
run tank with -30C N2O, pressurize it with 1000 psi. N2, light it up and
impress yourself with the performance increase compared to what you had done
previously.

Quick question for the list:
What has been your experience with purchasing N2O.
I'm looking at tanks with dip tubes, or inverting, and am concerned about
the grade.
The local racing shop has 'Racing grade' for $4.5/lb.
An actual compressed air supplier is questioning which grade we might want.
Racing, Medical, or Scientific. There seems to be a considerable variation
in price.
Horror stories about consumer Methane with mercaptins, or N2O with Sulfur
abound. It seems like getting the goop off your parts is quite difficult and
incredibly noxious. If we can't get Racing grade without the bad goop, that
one is out.
Medical Grade they are saying requires a doctor or medical facility
certificate. ( "He doc, can I have a prescription for 200lbs of N2O?") The
supplier is claiming "LAW" but an attorney can't find any reference in the
state statutes to work around. (free attorney!)
Now Scientific Grade is something like four nines of purity, and perfectly
useful, and even cheaper than the local speed shop, but still looking for a
bargain becuase I don't want to spend the extra $100 /tank.
I thought I remembered getting 'commercial grade' which was pretty much
available with a business license.
Does anyone have any experience in getting this for hyprids and such ?
