X11 uses the DDC to read the EDID, but there is no API that an application can use. It's something that should be added to XRandR, but it isn't seen as a high priority by the X11 developers at the moment. (Hint, it might help if there are a few polite requests to the Xorg mailing list, explaining why it would be a good thing to add this. Of course it would be even better if someone coded up a solution and contributed it.)
It is also annoying when vendors making as much on higher margin premium products like the 3090 don't publish open hardware specs so that drivers can be developed. (seeing as how the monitor could always just be priced $90 higher anyways).
That's the nature of it. Vendors seem to think that it's some advantage to keep it secret. Of course it's not actually secret because it's got to go across the cable to the monitor, but but someone has to bother to do the reverse engineering. Graeme Gill.
