X11 uses the DDC to read the EDID, but there is no API that an application
can use. It's something that should be added to XRandR, but it isn't

It is also annoying when vendors making as much on higher margin
premium products like the 3090 don't publish open hardware specs so that
drivers can be developed. (seeing as how the monitor could always just be
priced $90 higher anyways).

That's the nature of it. Vendors seem to think that it's some advantage
to keep it secret. Of course it's not actually secret because it's got
to go across the cable to the monitor, but but someone has to bother
to do the reverse engineering.
