Depends a great deal, too, on the laws of the governing jurisdiction -- which
can get quite confusing once it crosses international borders.

Probably depends even more on whether or not the camera manufacturer (or, more
specifically, its legal department) cares enough about it to pursue a case.

If you're doing it as an hobby and not threatening their business, you'd have a
decent chance of either flying under the radar or getting tacit approval. An
enlightened company would even give you active support...but so few companies
these days are enlightened.

And if you're not redistributing or publishing anything, there's nothing to
worry about.

Safest bet? Run it past a lawyer with relevant specialization.
