Hi David, The first thing I’d say is that there’s been no confirmation of this
move from the people who are supposed to be making it. Apple are notoriously
secretive about developments to their products until they make announcements
about them publicly in their own time. However, if the removal of the 3.5 jack
socket really does end up presenting access obstacles to hearing impaired
people then I imagine that Apple would welcome the feedback. It may, of course
also be that they have considered and found a pre-emptive solution in the event
of the jack socket being removed. I am a well-known fan of Apple products and
of the company’s approach to providing access solutions, but I am not totally
uncritical of them. Comments I’ve made on the accessibility of the set-up on
the Apple TV were fed back to them directly by me and were passed to the
accessibility team. As a result, it’s now my understanding that blue tooth
keyboards can be used with the TV to make set-up easier. I have no problem
with people flagging up potential access concerns about potential impacts on
accessibility but I do find the criticism of Apple’s decision from a marketing
and even company survival point of view rather over the top VI and other
disabled people are a tiny part of the Apple customer community and it seems to
me that in terms of provision they make for us we generally get a pretty good
deal from them. Personally, when it comes to the time for me to review the
latest iPhone and whatever features it does or doesn’t have, I will do so from
my own informed perspective as a disabled user of their products. I will be
making no pretence to being an expert analyst on the impact of what they do on
their place in the general market. They have people who are paid way more than
I am to make those sorts of calls and anticipate their impact.

I tend to agree. I tried to constructively criticise this step by Apple on an
Apple list from the perspective of a hearing impaired user of an iPhone and
of course got roundly condemned as being in the dark ages by the people who
adore every move Apple make and bristle at any negative comment . Bizarrely
somebody tried to draw an analogy with floppy drives, a technology which is
obviously incapable of meeting moern modern demands, with a technology
currently used perfectly adequately by millions. This did cause one poster
to wryly comment that the emotional people who were beligerently defending
Apple from any sort of critique were apparently "deaf to my concerns".
I currently have an SE but it is sadly likely to be my last iPh

What about people who use the headphone jack in conjunction with hearing
aids?
I think this is a bad move on Apple's part and I'm glad we have more
diversity in Android. If you rely on just one manufacturer, you will always
get this kind of problem.

Hi. I can’t see how it’s ripping off their customer base. If people don’t
like it then there is always Android or purchase a good quality wireless
headset for around £25 and you still will get good quality stereo sound. I
always found that I’m for ever replacing wired headsets after a few months
because one of the earphones stop working.
