Hi Catherine,
Yes the Logitech Marble Mouse is optical.

I use it on the second computer on my desk as it does not require any
rolling space as the normal mouse does.

I prefer the Wheel Mouse as it has the scrolling wheel for scrolling text
and web pages.
But it does occupy more desk space.
