It was a beautiful day today although it started out at 30 degrees at 6:30am. It warmed up as the morning progressed and there was little wind. Highlights: The Eastern Bluebirds have claimed most of the bluebird houses at the arb while the Tree Swallow have taken the rest. Sylvia has the actual numbers. A pair of Sandhill Cranes are still nesting in the marsh at Icke Boardwalk. A pair of Great Blue Herons flew over Curtis Prairie at 6:30am and absolutely glowed yellow in the early morning sun! Saw and heard sing Ruby-crowned Kinglets in four different areas of the arb - love their song Saw two Red-breasted Nuthatches - one in Longenecker and one in Wingra Woods. I don't see RBNUs that often in the arb Saw the female Pileated Woodpecker having a great meal high in a dead tree in Gallistel Woods The American Goldfinches, House Finches, Pine Siskins and remaining Dark-eyed Juncos were feasting on a bumper crop of seeds in the hybrid Elm trees in Longenecker The Yellow-rumped Warbler is the only warbler I've seen so far in the arb. Haven't seen any Fox Sparrows in the arb since March 30 Off topic: The Lilacs, Redbuds and Crabapples are gorgeous. Don't wait too long before you visit them. Jeff, it was great birding with you this morning. My eBird report is appended below.
