Hmmm.
I'll experiment some more Tim, but I think I already found out that the matrix view doesn't allow you to play something into it. You have to start by actually recording something on a track, and then put the resulting clip into a matrix view's cell, am I wrong? so yes, you could make it a nice jamming tool, but you would still have to jam with preprogrammed elements right?
Thanks for your help,

Hi,

I understand perfectly. I keep looking at the Native Instruments Machine, but
haven't had the opportunity to try it out for accessibility. Having said this,
you could load up a lot of Matrix View cells (88 if you've got a long enough
controller keyboard), assign each note to a different cell then save the lot as
a template. Once this had been set up it should be a good jamming tool, so a
little time investment at the start might well pay off big-time later.

Best wishes.

dear Tim,
sorry for not mentioning the matrix view myself. Of course, I knew about it.
But it's much too Cerebral for me. I'm really looking for something spontaneous
that allows improvisation, and that can be manipulated in real time.
If you knew about all rhythm machines or hardware sequences, not step
sequencers but things like Akai MPCs, well, I would like the software
equivalent of this.

I'm now kicking myself, as I should have suggested the Matrix View.
This gives you a grid where each cell in the grid can contain either
an audio or a MIDI clip. All cells in the same column can be triggered
to play at the same time, so you could have columns that represent
verses, choruses, breaks, etc., and/or individual cells (or groups of
cells) can be triggered by mouse or MIDI message. Finally, you can set
latching modes for each cell that control how long it plays. For
example, you could set a MIDI cell to trigger on the next beat after
you press a note on your controller - it could then either play to its
end, to the end of the current measure or continuously until you press
your MIDI note again. The overall performance can be be recorded to
traditional tracks, if that's what you want. It takes a bit of getting
used to, especially for an aged traditionalist like me, but it should do what
you want with a bit of fiddling around and practise.

Best wishes.

The nearest thing in Sonar is the Step Sequencer (don't get it
confused with the Step Record function). It's not great
accessibility-wise, but it can be made to work to some degree if you hit it
hard enough.

Best wishes.

Jean Philippe, I don't know of anything, but wouldn't simply looping a
part of a track do? Until you got what you wanted? Best steve.

Hi all,
does anyone know of an accessible midi looper that one could insert on
a sonar midi track, and that would allow building MIDI loops
on-the-fly, a bit like old rhythm machines or hardware sequencers such as the
MPC 3000 ?
