I think that is exactly what happened I did as you said and low and behold
there it was ok again, I've worked with excel for 22 years now and this has
never happened before,

It sounds to me like your excel has crashed!
My suggestion would be to exit out of excel altogether for a little while.
If you cannot do that, then I would suggest re-booting your Desk Top. Over!
Hopefully, you haven't a lot of info to lose!

Press escape to break out of the cell in case you are in edit mode.
Escape should de-activate the cell. Then arrow around to be sure you are out
of it.
