[TCUG] Re: old controller replacements

We have 2 main criteria's for replacement
1. Lamp monitoring for the provision of tactile facilities and removing
the need to rely totally on lamp faults being passed back through mop's,
engineers etc.
2. Lack of knowledge within the maintenance field on how to repair the
25's, 70s etc of this world. Like Bruce we have experienced sites being out
for days as site specific boards are replaced.

We also like Peter refurbish old T25 cases for future use.

We now no longer have any solid state controllers and are left one C3000.

I agree with Howard, if you have the luxury of funding to support a
replacement programme it needs to be based on a combination of age and
reliability. I think 15 years is too soon for a reliable controller in good
condition, but 25+ years is pushing it even if the controller is reliable.
Components age at different rates and even the highest spec ones will expire
eventually. At least 70s and 25s don't have EPROMs, which definitely have a
limited life, albeit you can probably reburn them if you can find an
appropriate burner. If you are reluctant to lose your old cases we have had
some success grit blasting and recoating old 25 cases to use as
miscellaneous equipment cabinets.

Wouldn't controller replacement criteria based on age and current
'reliability' be a better indicator for replacement policies?. We all know
that some types of older controller are very reliable - and unless there is
some other requirement for replacing the controller (e.g. changing the site
geometry or upgrading facilities on site - or spares availability) - why
replace reliable equipment?

(This is assuming there is funding for a controller replacement programme
anyway! - especially as in many cases, if it is time to replace the
controller, it is often also time to replace the rest of the street
equipment too!)

I'm with you Graeme.

Nothing worse than having to replace a good old T200 that's worked reliably
for 15 years or more with something that may not begin with a letter 'S'!
