I think the American count down for the remaining green man is a brilliant idea for exactly the reason A l a n=E1 S h a i l e s put forward. We are almost all capable of knowing our own capabilities and assess how long it would take to cross the road. The only problem I can see is would people still perceive this as a 'start to cross' indicator as it is followed by a clearance period, or not beginning to cross if they thought they could not make it before the timer expired - assuming that Red/Amber would appear to traffic at that instant? Overall, I believe showing time information to peds is much safer than to drivers, there will be the temptation for some motorists to beat the clock.
