I agree with Tony and Richard. (100%)

It's not only claims against the store they should be concerned about but
the way they are
disadvantaging the public ( some of whom would be customers) - we have
evidence that it is
not only the visually impaired who use the audibles. One Headmaster wants
audible signals
at a junction to "concentrate the minds" of his pupils. Apparently they are
so busy chatting, they
fail to watch the signals and then cross at the last minute, placing
themselves at risk from conflict.

We had a problem, for a while at one site, but the shop (not HoF) changed
the sound slightly.
We have also heard of problems with reversing alarms on large goods
vehicles.

Don't fight any battles on your own, include us and every association for
the blind.
May be worth consulting with them without delay.

Regards

Grahame

Dare one comment that the audibles are OUR standard (and there are a
darn sight more of them than House of Fraser stores.)
'if' they are concerned over liability then I would suggest that the
onus is on them to change there equipment (cant be altered!! More like
"we'd rather someone else thought about/paid for this"!!)
Cross with green figure going to be in braille as well is it??

Yours cynically

Tony

Subject: [TCUG] Audible Signals

We have a Puffin crossing sited close to the doorway of a House of
Fraser department store. We have discovered that the doorway security
system alarm sounds similar to the crossing's audible signal. Although
this doesn't operate frequently one of our staff has witnessed
pedestrians setting off to cross against a red signal when it sounded.
I have spoken with the Store Manager who informs me that this is their
standard countywide system and that the tone cannot be altered. The
volume has been set to suit their needs but would be heard from the
crossing at any volume. She could offer no solutions but was concerned
about the possiblity of claims of liability against the store if there
were an accident.

Has anyone experience of a similar problem, if so what steps did you
take and did you consider the legal and safety aspects? We are
considering adding "cross with green figure" signing.
