I do not mean this to be ugly, but I hope you are joking when you
set this as the style of dog you wish to breed. These illustrations were
done 45 years ago (certainly nothing to do with Manhattan). Since the
aim of sincere breeders as well as the GSDCA is to continuously
improve the breed, you cannot possibly be serious in your aim to
go backwards rather than forward. According to our standard, the dog
shown has an underdeveloped under jaw, a short neck, a short upper arm,
a saggy back, a steep croup, a short lower thigh, a long hock (metatarses)
and diluted pigment. This is not interpretation, just the facts, Kiddo.
If you are really serious about this breed and in learning about it, you
really should quit arguing with and disputing some of these people, such
as Fred, Tom, Joan, Peg, and others, who are not only dedicated breeders,
but also esteemed judges, who have successfully dedicated their lives
to moving this breed forward. Any one of them, as well as many others,
would be happy to help you if you would just give up your agenda to prove
all of us wrong and our dogs incorrect, I suspect, because you have a dog
that you love very much that cannot succeed in the conformation ring. Move
on, get some performance titles on that dog, and if you are truly serious,
take the advice and assistance that these people will give you in obtaining
and showing a dog in conformation. It can happen, and if you have an open
mind and a sincere desire to succeed, people will help you, even to the
extent of helping you get a good dog and helping show it. This will not
happen as long as you remain closed to that help, which actually translates
"I don't like any dog that doesn't look like mine"
I have not meant to hurt you, but if "tough love" can make you mad enough
to turn around and set a more realisic and workable goal, you might just be
surprised to see how many would be happy to help you, i know I would..

or roach, and relatively short." to mean a dog that looks like this when
stacked: http://www.fluffyrat.net/wildfyre/GSD.GIF
Not a dog whose butt heads south for the winter.

And I interpret "The whole assembly of the thigh, viewed from the side, is
broad, with both upper and lower thigh well muscled, forming as nearly as
possible a right angle."

To mean NEARLY a right angle, not EXACTLY as I see so many these days, which
takes away from the structure of the dog, as they now have an excessive amount
of thigh/stifle bone, which takes move time to move and follow through in the
rear, and thus, there goes the drive, because the dog can't extend properly

The metatarsus (the unit between the hock joint and the foot) is short,
strong and tightly articulated.

Which I take to mean as "The dog shouldn't be able, or shouldn't HAVE to put
his entire hock on the floor to support his body weight."

The ideal dog in the picture does not place his whole hock on the ground, he
does not have an excessive slope to his topline, and his rear does not have a
bunch of right angles. This is the style of dog I wish to breed for when I
finally get that far.

This is where interpretations differe, and where style comes into play.

I would like some
one to point out the places in it where you can have much of a different
interpretation.
