Well Carolyn......Advertising is maybe important but this is not all and
certainly many judges looks at the dogs. A beautiful dog is a beautiful dog
and a good judge will find it.
I did Herding group 2 weeks ago in Worcester Mass and I had no clue who was
in the ring, didn't know any dogs and handlers. I don't received all-breeds
magazine from USA. Maybe I should but I do my own things.This is the way I
work. My group winner went on to BIS. A great Australian Shepherd name
Chance. Never saw the dog before and never heard about him. They told me
after the show that he is #2 herding dog in the state and group #2 at
Westminster this year. My group #2 a Pulik, 3 times National winner, My
B.O.B. in Boxer was #5 dog all-breeds in USA ( I did part of Working
group)....My B.O.B. in GSD a great bitch, a select at the US National.The
group was extremely strong.All the dogs in the group selection were
beautiful. Simply beautiful dogs and a pleasure to judge if you take the
time to appreciate them and not just the pictures in the magazine.

You're right that judging the breed is the most important to get right.
The group and BIS, however, are soooooo often determined by the
advertising dollar. Those folks don't put $5,000 or more a month into
those magazines just so they can see their dog's picture. Also, you
have surely noticed that the handler is much more recognizable than
the dog -------not intentional ? Dream on. If that group judge does
not know the breed, he feels safe going with the highly advertised
favorite. BTW, this is true in many breeds. The thing we need to do
is to convince some of our die-hard specialty judges to get off their
duff ( yes, you, Fred ) and apply for some more breeds so that the
clubs can afford to hire you. You already have an advantage in that
if you are a good shepherd judge, it will be a walk in the park to judge
almost all of the herding, working, and sporting breeds. You would be
able to find the good ones even without the magazine adds. Big Grin.

By the time you get to Group, some one has pretty well "weeded your garden"
for you.
When it comes to Best In Show.....it is a matter of personal opinion as to
who is BEST.
These dogs don't get to BIS without being outstanding represenatives of
their breed.
Trust me, by the time a judge can "judge " BIS, they have spent along time
around other
breeds, groups of breeds and the people who exhibit them and breed them.
I guess I had better get in gear.........I'm 65 and I only judge the
Herding Group and part of
the Working Group.....let's see, that gives me 29 years to learn enough to
judge BIS.
