Well, I guess that depends on how much time and effort are spent in trying to learn. In the "more than 10 years" prior to my first application to judge, I spent more time at ringside observing, and just not GSD. Unfortunately, most exhibitors watch their own breed and leave the show........if you want to learn, you stay at ringside, you get to know breeders in other breeds, and you ask questions. How many GSD exhibitors stay and watch another breed....or stay and watch the Group.......not many, unless it's their dog in the Group Also, you spend countless hours at breed seminars...listening to top breeders in each breed........you do 'hands-on sessions".........you do "in-ring " observations under knowledgeable judges.....and even after you are "approved" for a breed, you go back to that ring and you watch and learn some more. I have attended every National for every breed I have applied for, with one exception....and that takes tons of time and money, too. Once a judge understands the basic anatomy of a dog and understands "movement" in general, a judge can place more effort in learning about those things that define "type" in each breed......and spend the time learning about the current concerns of the fanciers in any given breed. BTW.....ask any Working Group exhibitors........they love GSD judges........ because they understand movement. All in all, the best judges will be those that care( regardless of their original breed) ...........as it is with doctors, lawyers, politicians, etc...... some are in it for money, some for power and some because they love what they do. I am not sure what you can do to make people care. > =========================================================== > ========================================================== > I am convinced by your post that you know A good GSD but do you know all the > other herding breeds every bit as well not having bred and shown them for 10 > years as you did GSDs. If not and I don't know how you could. Then this is > the all breed judge that most shepherd people are complaining about you know > the Beagle breeder who now has all the breeds. I can remember > sitting in the judges room watching a judge reading a drug store copy of a know > your Cocker Spaniel and later happening to see him judging that breed. > That's the all breed judge I object to.
