[rollei_list] Re: OT Ancient Computers (was Re: Re: Rollei -Singapore) now analogue versus digital

I am comparing Canon EOS 1Ds Mk2 and Leica M8 with Rolleiflex 6008i and Mamiya 7. As you say, digital surpassed 35mm film years ago. I would say that MF has a resolution advantage over the digital I have available, which is not important for the biggest prints I make, but in every other way the digital is comparable or better IME. This resolution advantage is much smaller than I had expected. You flatter my darkroom skills! I was/am not bad but it took me an age to get the results I was satisfied with, and I really struggled to print several prints of the same picture close to each other with the complex dodging and burning needed to cope with the limited dynamic range and extreme contrast of Cibachrome, for example. Even if the digital and chemical workflows gave identical results I would use digital since, for me it has about 5x faster production rate.

cheers,
Frank

Hi Frank,

I have shot and processed digitally ever
since, and my results are better than I achieved
in the darkroom in 44 years.

Given the 35mm digital equipment you use, and assuming you were no slouch in the darkroom I can understand that you could get "better" results when compared to 35mm film. The latest highest end 35mm DSLRs are indeed quite good in almost all circumstances. For medium format, I'd still find any
comparison quite disputable.
