I did the same a few years ago, replacing the original 600 mAh cells with
Sanyo 1100 mAh (KR-1100AA) ones. Worked fine for me. Generally, you pay for
higher cell capacity with less robustness in the face of overcharge, high
current discharge, and an increased self discharge.

They probably could, but their self discharge rate is way higher than that
of NiCd cells. I thought about using NiMH cells when I rebuilt an SLX
battery, but decided to stick with the original 600 mAh cells since I
hardly ever use the SLX - the cells would have to be recharged before every
use.

Been there, done that - it can. I used Stabilit Express which is a
two-component epoxy glue with a powdery binding component and a liquid
hardener. It is used in professional setups. I had to re-work the flued
part with a small power drill and ball tool, which worked out nicely.

Well, that's not epoxy, it's cyanacrylate(sp?).

The quick charger has a plug for 12 V car batteries, which leads to a
resistor setting a charge current of ~ 50 mA. I bridged the resistor, and
plugged in an Ansmann ACS110 electronic charger - works perfectly for both
the 3003 and the SLX battery packs.

That's the type of charger, yes. It adjusts not to cell temperature like
the Rollei quick chargers, since that is too vague, but to characteristic
changes in cell voltage under load.
