But the API has to get the info from somewhere -- and that has to have software 
associated with it. Isn't the API you are talking about just a layer over the 
video driver? Jaws uses whatever hooks the OS gives in addition to the video 
driver.  
Well, I have not hacked that particular type of code so I'll defer. If NVDA has 
a way of accessing the info it needs without using the video driver, you would 
think FS and GW Micro would have borrowed the mechanism by now -- after all, 
NVDA is open source.

  Somehow I missed the question about the video driver the first time around.  
From what I know, NVDA shouldn't depend on a video driver because it uses APIs 
to get the job done.  This means, I think, that it takes direction directly 
from the operating system and/or the program you are using.  There are no video 
hooks in NVDA.
