Windows messenger and MSN messenger are pretty much the same thing. They
are a instant messaging program, to allow two or more people to talk to each
other over the internet, or possibly a intranet too.
There is also Messenger, which is found in W2K and also XP Pro, but I don't
think it is in XP Home. This is used by systems manager and systems
administrators. it is for you to send a message to either a group,
individual or even the whole enterprise, to inform them of things that are
happening. So you could wish a person happy birthday, tell the group of a
meeting, or even that all have to close down their machines, as the servers
are being worked on. As you can se there are many uses for this option.
If you remove MSN or Windows messenger, then if you select Windows
Messenger, Windows will reload it ,as it is built in to XP. So you will
find MSN Messenger in the normal add/ remove programs and the Windows one in
the Add/ remove Windows components.
I also believe that if you install MSN messenger, it will over ride Windows
messenger, unless you deliberately launch the Windows one.

I had never clicked on the add/remove windows components before!
it lists windows messenger in there - says it will remove it from the start
up menu. It has a checkmark by it now - I'm a little confused on what will
actually happen with it if I uncheck it - will that add it back into the
start menu? (I would remove windows messenger also )-
but no sign of msn messenger - they seem to be identical, but two separate
programs.
I'm wondering if I went to add/remove before when I had problems with it and
tried to remove it then.
I have the little icons on my Internet explorer bar - just says messenger -
doesn't say which one it is. They both use the same icons too.
guess I am being really dense about all of this....

Did you go to add / remove programs, add / remove Windows Components?
Messenger is hidden away in here, and once you remove the hide from the
sysoc.inf, it will then show up.
Once you have removed it and windows has done its bit, you can then go and
remove the folder from the Program files folder too. It does work as I have
done it on a about 4 machines so far.

If you remove the "hide", on any entry, it then allows it to show up in add
and remove programs , under the windows section. That is why I said be
careful with what you then remove.
I removed the word hide from every entry, and then I found many things I
could remove, but some I had no idea what there were etc, so I left them.
it allow me to remove things like Messenger, Media Player etc. So that is
why I said be careful, don't delete from the list, what you are not sure
about.

ok - I found the file and the line.
when you say - On all entries that have hide.....
what do you mean by ALL entries ?
all entries in that entire page? or just the one in that string?

If the follow the following information, you can uninstall MS Messenger and
a few other things in XP, just be careful what you delete though.
Edit sysoc.inf. This file can be found in a folder named INF, which is in
the
C:\WINDOWS\inf folder. You can open that file in notepad. Look for the
following line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
On all entries that has hide, remove the word hide, but leave the comma's.
Now you can remove the files in add/remove programs.
Once you have told Windows to remove Messenger, you can then delete the
files from the program files folder also.
As I said, just be careful on what you do delete after you can see the
programs listed.
