To correct problems with the Windows update, here are the options listed,
These options are not listed in any particular order of priority or
importance. It is humbly suggested that you look at all the options, decide
which course of action you want to take ad act accordingly.

(1) Install and run a FREE application/program named BIGFIX, which you can
get from this site.

www.bigfix.com/

The BigFix application allows you to select and install all updates WITHOUT
your going to the Microsoft site...The BIGFIX server fetches the updates and
allows you to grab them from the BIGFIX server.

(2) Do a REPAIR of the MSIE browser...

(3) RE-REGISTER the following the files...This is necessary because
something in your REGISTRY has been altered. and that has to be corrected.
By re-registering the files you have effectively removed the updates. Maybe
the files are still on your computer but they are no longer registered or in
use. The files are listed below.

Run these at the command line (the files will be re-registered):

regsvr32 msscript.ocx

regsvr32 dispex.dll

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

regsvr32 scrrun.dll

What is meant by RUN from a command line....This is what is done...

From the desktop, select Start > Run and type "regsvr32 msscript.ocx"
without the quotes. Click OK.

Do the same for

regsvr32 dispex.dll

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

regsvr32 scrrun.dll

Part of the problem is that JS files are not being read correctly. In other
words INCORRECT file association. So you want to make the proper
association. Check if file type .JS is properly associated:

Check and make sure the Application to perform action field
has this in it C:\WINDOWS\WScript.exe "%1" %*

To do this...there are several ways but here is one way...

Go to Start. then Click on SETTINGS....then click on FOLDER OPTIONS...then
click on FILE TYPES Tab. When that window opens scroll down since all the
entries are in alphabetical order to an entry named Js Script file....Hilite
that entry, then press the button marked EDIT..Then a new window opens..When
that window opens, somewhere about the middle of the page you will see a box
titled ACTIONS...and INSIDE that box you should see the word OPEN..Hilite
the word open and click on EDIT...then a new page opens and there you should
see if the file association is as advised,,,, DO NOT change ANYTHING BEFORE
writing down what was there originally...The obvious reason is you can
always revert to its pristine state if you know what that state was.

(4) Did you know you could download them with out using the "update site"?

If you know what update you need then go to:Windows98 was used as an
example.. but from the main site you can select the OS.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp

and download and install them manually. Most of them has a description of
what they are for.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows98/downloads/corporate.asp

OR..

Try going directly to www.microsoft.com and manually find windows update via
links.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/default.mspx

(5) Here is a great website for Trouble Shooting Windows Update.

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/troubleshoot/

(6) Open Windows Explorer. Then drill down to Windows Directory...expand
that directory and locate the WINDOWS UPDATE Setup files folder....within
that folder locate setup and delete that file. You can even delete the
entire folder named WINDOWS UPDATE setup files That will cause the updater
ENGINE to be REINSTALLED when you go back to the windows update site

AND..... this option kindly furnished by SIR Troth.

(7) For whoever was having trouble with Windows Update, I got this from a
Lockergnome (http://www.lockergnome.com) newsletter:

With the various Windows security issues and viruses floating around lately,
having Windows Updates working for you is key. Digging into the GnomeTIPS
history files, we received this message from Gnomie Herman about how to
solve some Windows Updates problems: "Referencing the July 30, 2003 posting
about Windows Updates not downloading (the second tip in that issue)... the
following was obtained from Microsoft (don't remember exactly where on their
site) and it worked for me. I had the same problem. I am running Windows
98SE. Here are the steps I took:
1.. Click on the following link to download a file called MCREPAIR.EXE:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/msninvestor/patch/1.0/win98/en-us/mcr
epair.exe, and save this file to your Desktop.
  2.. Open Windows Explorer.
3.. Create a temporary backup directory called C:\Backup.
4.. Navigate to the C:\Windows\System directory.
5.. Copy these files to the C:\Backup directory:
    a.. Asycfilt.dll
    b.. Oleaut32.dll
    c.. Olepro32.dll
    d.. Stdole2.tlb
6.. Verify that copies of these files are in the C:\Backup folder.
7.. Return to your Desktop and double-click on the file MCREPAIR.EXE.
8.. Click Yes to any messages that appear. Once the process is complete,
you will be prompted to reboot your PC.
9.. After your system boots, try the Windows Update site again. If the
download still hangs, and/or you encounter problems with other applications
on your PC then you can use the following steps to restore your original
files:
    1.. Open Windows Explorer.
2.. Navigate to the C:\Backup folder.
3.. Copy the four files to this folder: C:\Windows\System.
4.. Click the "Yes To All" button when the popup message appears asking
if you want to overwrite the existing files.
    5.. Now re-boot your PC."
