I find this to be true if you are not looking for anything spectacular from
the spec, but it's still a lot cheaper to put together a higher specced
machine yourself AND you get to choose the components that suit you, not the
maker.

As for the difficulty in doing it yourself? Speaking as someone with hooves
for hands, it's one of the easiest 'technical' things you can do. If you can
use a screwdriver, you can do it.
