I was just thinking in terms of color coding - without writing with it. Like 
paint an inch of the wire on each end a specific color - you'd still need the 
tape with the label, but the tape wouldn't necessarily have to be different 
colors....

Nail polish is great. I use it to label my kids' black calculators for
school. Too much theft there -- the name is big and prominent, and doesn't
chip off easily at all, I guess since calculators don't grow like nails do
<g>. It's hard to write small with the brush though, a problem if you're
labelling wires.
