My first post and it's a question for any and all to answer :- Has
anybody out there got, or used, phase converters ?. I'm just on the verge
of
building the new workshop for an attempt at a 41/2" Burrell but will need
bigger
machinery than I have at the moment, which really means going to 3 phase. I
have heard good and bad things abut these bits of kit but would rather hear

from people in the know (as it were). I have definately been told that a
rotary
will be better than a solid state. ALL replies, good or bad, will be most
welcome.

Hi Steve,
I run my workshop equipment on a static three phase convertor and have
run a 3P ring main round the workshop to accommodate the three machines (
Lathe, Mill & Shaper) I did originally build a rotary convertor and it was
very
successful, using a 1 HP, 3P motor the problem with this was that it was a bit
limiting in that it would only run satisfactorily motors of a similar size.
The static convertor (a commercial item) is rated at 7hp is well on top
of its job and I can if I wish run all 3 Items at the same time.
To sum up, Inverters are the cheapest method (other than self build) and
of course as a bonus you have full control over the motor speed. Static
convertors are the next option, can be built relatively cheaply, or purchased
second hand at a modest cost. Rotary Convertors are the most expensive option
unless self built.
If I were to start again and had to buy new I think I would go down the
inverter road given the advantages of speed control etc, for Motors of about
1 Hp they are reasonably priced but the cost climbs quite steeply over this
size.
As stated by an earlier listee they are available on Ebay at sensible
prices with back up.
I hope this is of some use to you.
Best wishes
Don
