Hi Bede,

If you are thinking of cutting grooves in the Ties ( Sleepers ) to us Brits, 
may I point out a problem that can happen when you force the bar in.
From where you have cut the groove, the wood on the end of the tie sheers 
off along the grain leaving your rail without support.
It all depends on the size of the tie and type of wood.
