I should have added as an alternative, wind on, say, 1,000 turns or so.
That should certainly be enough to work OK irrespective of wire size.

I got the impression that it was a small generator, although you didn't
specifically say so.
I do agree with what you say. Winding that much wire could also get a trifle
tedious.

I would fit in about 4 oz of wire. Now all you have to do is work out what
gauge that would be to fill the gap!
