A good strong solution of caustic sode is excellent for dipping aluminium sheet items, such as those used in electronics. Commercially, it used to be followed by a dip in dilute (25%) nitroc acid, and was known as 'caunit dip'. However, swabbing with vinegar removes the black deposit that the caustic dip leaves, and the result looks nice on a chassis, and takes paint well. One does it outdoors, of course....... Caustic soda is still used for drain cleaning, (it dissolves the fats) and you can still get it at good hardware stores in the UK. Peter Chadwick Swindon MODEL ENGINEERING DISCUSSION LIST.
