I think you will find the value of a model up for sale is very different
from insurance value, When you come to sell a model you look at previousely
sold similar items and base your value against them + or - the quality of
workmanship and finish. With insurance you should look at replaceable value,
ie, the cost of repacement like for like, whether or not you go out and
commision someone to construct an identicle model or build youself one from
scratch. 2yrs ago I made a snap decision to sell my Thomas 2, I looked
around and spoke to variouse who had been involved with large 7 1/4 models
and the general value was put at 24K, so I advertised at 24500 and had no
shortage of people wanting to part with their money, I ended up not parting
with the loco as circumstances changed. This engine is now down at the
Museum of power in Langford Essex on loan and they have to maintain and
insure it, So to insurance values, I spoke to a commercial builder who has
built several of these locos and has seen my model and asked for a writen
quotation for the construction of a replacement, this value was then used to
insure the model, which means in the event of my pride and joy dissapearing
it should be replaced with no arguments. Tim 2
