The only way to know is to try a Mac.
The price you mentioned sounds reasonable but remember the MacMini
is not a laptop. It's a very small desktop and it needs you to give
it a keyboard, mouse, monitor, etc. As far as I know, it won't work
without a monitor but I may be wrong.
I'd personally recommend an iMac if you want a desktop or a Macbook
Pro if you need a laptop.
I also don't think the mini has a built-in mic or webcam like the
iMac does.

I found a mac mini for $450 on amazon with the latest mac OS
leopard. What are the advantages of mac over windows? Do more
applications work on the mac than work on windows? I also want to
