I have it set that the maximum lines are read without having to open the
message, however if a link has to be clicked or an attachment saved the message
has to be opened....it seems.
The issue of the cursor returning to the start also happens to me and is
annoying, I use quicknav to scroll more quickly, set to paragraph or whatever
is the appropriate option.

Hi Ian,
I wonder if that may be part of my issue. I typically don't interact with an
email message when I open it to read. I'll have to give that a try.
Thanks for that reminder,
Russell

Plus one on the welcome. My biggest stumbling block switching from Windows
was interacting, sometimes you can’t navigate a Finder folder because you’re
not interacting, sometimes a document starts reading from the start instead
of where you thought you were, turns out you weren’t interacting. It becomes
second nature, but takes a bit to get used to. One other thing is VO J, it
does a ton of useful things, but is different depending on the application.
The official tag for it is go to linked item, in Finder it’s usually the
side bar, in Pages it’s the formatter, that kind of thing.
There are also different ways to do the same thing, as noted in responses to
Russel’s query, you can open a message with return/enter, command O, or jump
to it with VO J. If you use VO J, you have to remember to VO J back to the
mail list, closing the message is actually closing the whole mail window
because all you did was jump to the viewer pane, things like that.
All the best, ask away.

Hey guys, I am new to the list. My name is Michael. This is a very
interesting topic since it is, I am coming from windows myself, and
learning to use a Mac. Thanks for the info. This answers a lot of
questions for me. Just learning how to use everything. Hold onto your
hats. I may be sending other questions as well. Thanks for posting. Helps
a lot

Hey Mark,
I use Command + O to open the email message. I tried your method of
pressing VO + J, and it seems to work better, but I noticed that when you
press the CTRL key to stop reading, the focus gets placed on the
paragraph you were in when the reading was stopped, but not necessarily
on the last word spoken, like it does with JAWS in Windows.
Thanks for the tip, I wouldn't have ever thought that might be the issue!
Take care,
Russell

How are you getting from the messages table to the message content area?
I use VO J to jump between them, and I wonder if you’re using another
method, which is telling your VO cursor to stay in the messages table,
rather than jumping to the content area? I know you can use Tab to move
between messages table and content area, which might not drag the VO
cursor along?

Hi everyone,
I'm running macOS Monterey on my iMac 2017. When reading email messages
in the Mail app, the VO cursor does not follow the keyboard focus, even
though it's set to do that in the VO Utilities, Navigation settings.
So, what happens is, if I open an email message and press VO + A to
begin reading the email, and, then, I press the CTRL key to pause VO
reading so that I can more closely read the email, the VO cursor will
still be at the beginning of the email, even though I've read half of
the email message. So, the only way I can get to the point where VO
left off reading is to press the down arrow key until I get to that
point, which, if the email message is a long one, can be very tedious.
I hope I'm explaining this in a way that makes sense. What I'd like to
happen is, when I press VO + A to start reading an email message, and
then I press the CTRL key to stop the reading, I'd like the VO cursor
to be at the point where I stop reading, and not still at the beginning
of the message.
Is there a setting I am missing?
Additional note: I just noticed, while composing this email message,
that the VO cursor does, indeed, follow the keyboard focus, so the
problem only exists when reading an existing email message, and not
when composing a new message.
Thanks for any suggestions,
Russell
