Robert Paul wrote of Lawrence Helm's account of Nigeria:
"1989 was, by my calculation, 18 years ago. Things may well have changed
since then."
Things have changed. The time Lawrence is referring to was a time when
Nigeria was under military dictatorships and attempted coups were a yearly
rite. Further, Nigerians have the well-deserved reputation of telling
people the stories they want to hear. I particularly like the bit about
spears. We lived in Nigeria for three years, travelling throughout the
country, and I never once saw a spear.
Sincerely,
Phil Enns
