John you were correct.  I changed back to the old function in the 2.5.3 release 
and I went from 8600 back translation problems to 400.  I don't know what else 
it breaks but should I go ahead and make a diff of this and send it to the 
list?  It sure looks much better.

The problem is in the function isEndword in lou_backTranslate.c . It is 
supposed to determine whether a potential contraction is followed by 
something that could be part of a word. It was working. However, when I 
tried to fix some reported bugs sometime last year that evidently made 
it worse.
