The only problem is the mirror size with a larger than full 24 x 36 mm format. Clearance with the rear element is an issue. Coverage of the circle of confusion is not the issue here. The lenses will cover anything up to 36 x 36 mm. But mirror clearance is the issue as I see it and the larger the mirror the slower the max. shutter speeds.

Yes. The diagonal of a 24x36mm frame is 43.27mm ... so any lens capable of covering a 35mm format, must have an image circle greater than 43.3 mm. Thus, current optics would easily cover a 27mm by x36mm sensor.

This would destroy many claims made here that with 35mm format you use them to the full.

Well, you do, but there is a wee bit more in them!
