Reading the following one could question whether the delay in the R8/R9 digital back might be assigned to unpaid bills as much as "technical difficulties." Hope not and hope it does finally arrive.

Notice of Loss

Leica Camera AG, Solms, expects the existence of a loss in the amount of half of its registered share capital in March 2005. The Company?s Board of Management will make a corresponding announcement according to section 92 (1) of the German Stock Corporation Law (AktG) at a General Meeting to be held on May 31, 2005.

Concurrently, the Board of Management prepares a turnaround strategy. It will propose at the General Meeting on May 31, 2005 that capital measures be taken. In connection with such measures audits are conducted at present. The measures proposed will be announced and published in the designated journals at the time of the convening of the General Meeting and the announcement of its agenda.

Hi Kent!

I am afraid you may be right. The rumours I've heard are in the range of 10 million Euros, though I'm unsure if that is a quarterly, half year or full year loss.

It has caused me to back away from the DM-R for fear that even if it is delivered, it may need software patches/fixes/upgrades which simply may never be produced due to either Leica's financial position and/or collapse.

I find the whole thing rather sad, actually, for they really do produce some of the finest glass on the face of this planet. There was a time, in the 1920's and in the 1950's when Leica was a highly respected, highly innovative firm. But, no longer.

I will not part with my Leicas... their film cameras are magnificently made, if behind the times, and my R8 and SL will likely out last me. But if I go digital, and I suspect I will before summer, it will be the LeiCanon route. Sadly, it only makes sense. :(

Stasys... will this alter your plans to acquire a DM-R?

Let us hope their 'turn around plan' is well thought out and practical. I'd still hate to see them go.

Cheers!
