Jim and list-
Where is the real start-up folder in VISTA, or are there several you
need to delete stuff from?
And, Insert-F10 shows about 10 things running while JAWS is the only
thing on the taskbar. Any idea what that is all about?
AOL shows up in the system tray, but was never even installed on the
laptop. I've deleted everything that said 'AOL' and it is still in the
system tray. Any ideas on how to kill this thing?

And the rule of thumb is this adjust visual settings for best
performance. Don’t load anything at start up you don’t need. Get a copy
of dectalk access 32 it will use less system resources and ram. Hth

Let me correct something, You can get a rating of 3.0 and still have
good performance on a laptop.
The Laptop I have is aAcer 9400 series Full size laptop. The scores is
as follow. Processor: 4.7 Memory: 4.6 arrow desktop 3.9 Gameing
Graphics 3.7 Hard drive 5.0.
Note: This is the score I have, after upgrading the Hard Disk to a
Hybrid drive, and also using Modded INF Drivers for the video and other
tweaks. I could make the score be higher if I wanted to push the laptop
in overclocking mode, but, that would be stupid as then you would not
have long battery life, and chance on hardware and software failure.
I build computers, and do networking and so forth.
I find that Vista runs better with a good video card, even if you don’t
need it, it helps. Also if you were building a desktop computer, don’t
skimp on the sound card, as Vista has a whole new sound engine as far as
being able to control each application sound levels and other things.
I have installed Vista, on a laptop that is 3 years old, it only had
512 meg of ram, and ran vista fine. Just that it was slow to boot, and
took time to load anything up. Which could be fixed with more ram.
Just a rule of thumb with Vista, If you go cheap it will be slow, if
you invest a little extra and get better hardware, it will run better.

Because Vista rely very heavily with the video, even with jaws
disabling the arrow features and such, if you got a cheap low score
rating on the video, your system will spend more time thinking on
graphics then any other task hence lag. Trust me, I built a new rig
just last week, and used it’s onboard S3 Basic Video, while installing
Vista. After installing it had a score rating of 1.0 on graphics for
gaming and arrow feature. Yet, when I installed the new Video card that
I purchased. It went up to 5.6 rating. Keep in mind, when it was a
rating of 1.0, it took 6 minutes for Vista to load up to the log in,
once I installed the Video card, which was a geforce 8600 with 512 it
didn’t take but 10 seconds to load to log in screen. That’s the reason
I say make sure it’s got a high rating at least 4.0.
The laptop I’m using has a Nvidea 7300 Go Video graphics with 128mb of
dedecated memory which is not shared with the main memory which makes a
big difference also.
I could go on and on. But, I think you see what I’m saying. Don’t
skimp out of the video when dealing with Vista, even tho you might can’t
see the video, doesn’t mean that vista doesn’t.

If you are planning on getting a new laptop, that has vista, make sure
it has at lest 2 or more gig of ram minimal and at least a intel 2 duo
or AMD x2 core processor.
Also, if possible ask to check for the scores in the demo laptop, as
this will give you a idea of how good is the laptop. Tell them to go
under performance under control panel and there will be the performance.
They should be able to see the score given to each category. The
highest score is 5.9 so with that in mind, the lower the score for each
the slower the laptop will be. Graphics is the main one I would be
looking at, if it’s got anything lower the a 4.0 rating I would not
touch it unless it’s the only one they have that you can affored.
Also most laptops do not come with a Hybrid Hard drive. Which helps
vista run faster and saves battery power. Mine did not come with this,
as I purchased it for newegg for 99 dollars, a 160 gig Samsung with 256
MB flash drive.
