I don't understand.  I'm under the impression that the Word spell checker 
presents the same interface as before, and is not a task pane, whereas the 
thesaurus is.  So if you've disabled the task pane (by which I take it you 
mean the thesaurus interface), why would invoking the spell check have any 
effect on that?
