You can also permenantly disable the task pane under the word options.

I have Word XP here at home and Word 2003 at work. The task pane comes up
using the Thesaurus, or other functions such as the Templates dialog, on
2003, but was not fully implemented on Word XP. You move between the task
pane and the document using F6, as a poster reported earlier.

To close the task pane, I've found you can press Alt V for the view menu and
arrow down to Task Pane and hit enter to close it. Or you can press Control
F1 to do the same thing. I really don't like it, but it's there. It makes
it hard to handle, with numerous versions all doing something different.
