RE: IE 7 and JAWS

Hi Yardbird,

I think Kelly answered the question I had...for me I wasn't getting a window
that needed to be closed, just the announcement that an RRS feed was
available.

If you do as Kelly suggests and press Insert+V and arrow down to RSS feed
availibility announcement you'll probably find that yours is set to
"Virtualize", while mine is set to "speak" Press the space bar until yours
is set to "speak" and you won't need to close any window after that. Or, if
you like, you can turn announcements off, but I'd suggest you fool around
with the RSS feeds a bit...it's a really nice feature.

Cheers,

Russell

Russell, maybe I used the wrong expression. Maybe it's not accurate to call
this a pop-up. In any case, it's a small window that appears covering the
top quarter of a loading Web page and seems to have only the message RSS
Feeds available and a Close button on it. If it were really a literal
pop-up, I suppose my IE6 pop-blocker would prevent it from appearing. In any
case, it's a visible window-like display that doesn't allow the Web page to
fully load until you close it. Hope that's more clear.

Hi Yardbird,

For me I don't get a popup window, just an announcement that there is an RSS
reed available on the website. I can then read the page and find out what
the RSS feed is about, and if it's interesting I press Alt+J and I'm placed
in a window that allows me to subscribe to the feed. Then, at a later time I
can press CTRL+J to bring up a list of all the feeds I've subscried to and
press enter on the one I want to read.

you mean that's how you can respond to that pop-up announcement that comes
up as a page is trying to load, with a button to close it (Escape works,
too)? Just press control J if you want to? How come there aren't any
instructions right on that pop-up? It seems like such a senseless thing (I
can see that it's a pop-up, masking the page that's loading). Weird stuff.

One more short cut key I use is when I hear Jaws say RSS feed I press Alt+J
to subscribe to the feed if it is one I'm interested in.

Hi,

Although it isn't JAWS specific, there is a quick reference guide to IE7 at
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/ie/quickref.mspx.

The most common hotkeys I use include:

Ctrl+t to open a new tab.
Ctrl+shift+q to list all open tabs.
Ctrl+j to list RSS feeds I've subscribed to.
Ctrl+e to put focus in the search box

Some settings changes you may want to make:

1. Have IE play a sound when an RSS feed is detected by opening Internet
Options, selecting the content tab and then feed settings. There's a check
box to have a sound played.
2. You may also want to explore some of the tab settings. You can ensure
that you only get one IE window open all the time by making some adjustments
as to whether new pop-ups open in a new tab, a new window or if IE decides.
Personally I set this to open in a new tab.

Kelly

Hi Allen,

On this topic, may I ask how difficult it is to learn how to use IE 7 if you

install it? With Jaws V. 8.0.2107, of course, is what I'm talking about.
I've heard that it's only got a few features that a person would have to
learn, like this thing about tabbed windows, but even then, what I'd like to

know is, is there a place you can go to simply read some instructions for
how to use the new browser, specifically with Jaws as your access tool? I'd
love to consider finally switching over (upgrading, I guess we're supposed
to say) because I heard in the FS podcast that IE 7 works really nicely with

RSS feeds, and that's an area I'd like to learn how to work with, soon.

thanks for any helpful suggestions.

All best,
The Bird

hi,
for me, it is working fine out of the box. the only setting that i've made
is to change the default search engine to google instead of msn search by
default.

I'm just now getting ready to install IE 7, and I'm using JAWS 8. Are there
any settings I should change in IE 7 to make it work better with JAWS?
Thanks.
