Yes, there can be a never ending list of proprietary softwares that
might out do free softwares. But the basic difference is the freedom
that free softwares offer while non-free softwares donot. It is upto
oneself whether they want to be in a prison and tied to proprietary
software OR to lead a happy computing life (maybe with/without an
appreciable loss/gain in features/functionality). Again, it depends on
one's ethical view point and what they want to do, if all that one
wanted was to type out a document, yes, there are free alternatives.
OTOH if one wanted "exactly" all that <name your favourite non-free
software> has to offer then there isn't much help to offer. As was said
earlier there are certain sacrifices that one may have to make to be
free.
Primarily the reason for starting off this thread is that we, in ILUGC,
have been admirers of free softwares and I thought ILUGC wanted to share
good moral values with its members? am I asking for something that I can't
get here?
