Then came the time to upgrade the hardware. Easy, we got it. But, the
software vendor is no longer available in India. Well, 1,25,000
lines of codes in 4GL had to be discarded. I had to relean rewrite in
another proprietory technology. The story repeated 6 years
later.Funniest thing is more than 90% of time I was doing 1-1
translation opening old programe code in one window and new in another.
Ok, I respect your opinion. Now, what I don't understand (and my lack of
understanding here may be because I don't know the full story) how OSS
would have helped you here? Like Eric S Raymond says, OSS is a lot about
scratching someone's itch . In your case, unless someone found the
software you were working on cool interesting, you would be pretty much
be on your own. Just look at the number of dead projects on Sourceforge.
Do not get carried away by company owned product, better carried away
by community owned software, after all you are also owner of it.
That's the very point I'm trying to make here. There's a huge .NET
community (and especially here in Chennai). Basically, I know tons of
people who live,eat and sleep .NET..and who love to help out other
folks. You don't need OSS to have a great community....:-)
You need not be defender of any company, unless you are an employee of
that
I'm only trying to correct some bad misconceptions and people making
statements without checking their facts(like the one about students and
.NET in MIT). I personally have a lot of friends and MS...I know how
passionate about their work they are..and how good they are at what they
do. I really don't want to stand by and be silent when they get
criticized by those who don't even bother to check up on whether what
they're saying is true.For example, I have a very close friend on the
Rotor team (the open source .NET thing). This was called a 'cheap trick'
by one of the other posters...but I know how much effort he and his team
puts in to Rotor. Trust me..MS takes it as seriously as the real .NET
implementations...their QA and testing procedures are truly
mind-boggling.
Now, I hope this thread has come to an end. I'm a big Linux fan and I
run RH9 at home...I code more in Python than .NET. In fact, I think
Python is better than any MS language (though I love VB too).When I
attend MS meetings or hang out with MS folks, rarely do I see any Linux
bashing. In fact, I have a friend in MS Bangalore(who I can't name for
obvious reasons :-) ) who was jumping around in excitement when Fedora
was released...he just loved the new splash screen :-) However, almost
any OSS meet I go to or any OSS group I'm a part of seems to have a
large share of MS bashing. I'm in this group to learn about all the cool
stuff Linux can do...not to hear about how people think Windows sucks.
Do search for Linux on my group (
http://groups.msn.com/cnugstudent). I
can guarantee that you won't find a single piece degrading any OSS
software..in fact, we've had long threads on how to install Mono on
Linux.
Linux is cool by its own right..you guys really should stop thinking of
how you can stick it to MS and start thinking of how you can make Linux
better..and how you can make Linux accessible to a lot more people. I'm
only echoing what people like Eric.S.Raymond have already said....
Ok..hope that this is the last of this thread. Let's get back to the
cool stuff on Linux rather than the misinformed MS posts.
