Hi,

Rimas,
BeShare isn't dead, just lacks users... The goal here is to have a unified app, preferably included in R1, for the community to connect to. What are the advantages of XMPP?

Ability to chat to friends using Google talk, Facebook (I guess) and a bunch of the users of other servers/services. XMPP servers can also provide ICQ, MSN, YIM, IRC, you-name-it gateways, empowering their users to log in once and see friends from all other proprietary networks.

I've never used it.. I tried "Chat" from haikuware, but it doesn't seem user friendly.. Do you know a good XMPP client to use?

For Haiku, not sure. I have Caya [1] installed on my Haiku, but I don't really use Haiku for work, so I can't say how good it is in your terms.

Back in the day, I was using Jabber For Beos, which was shareware, but has been open-sourced later [2]. However, its development seems to have stalled (although it looks like at least one of its developers is now working on Caya).

The Chat app you mentioned [3] also looks like a decent client, at least from the screenshot on its page. :) I don't know what you find non-user-friendly in it, but I have a theory: even though IM protocols often provide both user-to-user chat and groupchat abilities, for some reason, clients often focus on one of these aspects, making the other secondary. For example, most popular IRC clients focus on groupchat, meanwhile apps like Skype and all XMPP clients I know focus on user-to-user chat (making rooms harder to discover). Looking at BeShare, I think that perhaps what you are looking for is an app which focuses on groupchat? In that case, why not just use Vision IRC client to join #haiku on FreeNode? IRC still has a plenty of users, you wouldn't feel alone there, AND there's already a Vision optionalPackage.
