But that's not really what is needed here... what is the point of
resetting only the CPU, apart from getting out of protected mode, if
you don't cleanly reload anly operating system components?

The whole discussion, BTW, loses a lot of its point as soon as there
is a suspend-to-disk option, either with ACPI or without it.
