yes there should be fixed api before R1 but that should be doable in the
short term , i.e. after adapting the first applications to use the new api.

Before the API to store/restore the application state can be finalized, we need to define the exact requirements we have for it.

And that only really can be done once we have designed and implemented a profile/session/whatever manager.

I think it would be a good idea to have a look at the newest Mac OS X which introduces a similar mechanism, which, I think goes into the right direction, although they don't go as far to implement profiles.
