Karen Probst Appleton Public Library Our answers are virtually the same as Gretchen's from Neenah, except we do a higher number. We issued over 100 in 2007 and 2008, 68 in 2009. Also, essentially all to Lawrence now that we are aware UW-O and FVTC issue cards to Wisconsin residents over 18. We do not actually know how many are *used* but since many are for repeat customers, I expect most are. I don't see any plans for expansion, but it fills a need we can't address otherwise at this point. We only issue courtesy cards on library cards in good standing with permanent addresses, not for temporary address such as half way houses or the shelters, and the insurance fund is always there if need be. I only remember using it *ONCE* in the last 15 years or so. I would expect that any area with private institutions could benefit from this kind of arrangement, perhaps just between two institutions. It's just very convenient to cover all of FVLC and to already have some kind of structure in place to "administer" it. From an ILL standpoint, it's a great way to get things to the patron fast, and with less tracking and paperwork on our part. As part of their discussion, they started looking at programs in which multitype groups (like FVLC) had reciprocal access agreements. The FVLC Courtesy Card program rose to the top of their list. So they'd like to know the answers to these questions -- and I'd like to hear from you about any responses you have. What do you think about courtesy cards? Are they used? How often (or why not)? That kind of thing. a. What are the key elements of your program? b. How has your program been marketed? not marketed - primarily repeat customers or those who need something ASAP and cannot wait for ILL. c. How is your program perceived by patrons? those who use it appreciate the opportunity to use Lawrence's resources. d. Would you consider your program to be a PR success? Why or why not? e. How is authentication handled? (This means authentication that the person has a card at a Wisconsin library and is in good standing) We verify that customer has a library card in good standing before we issue a courtesy card. f. Can you share statistics/metrics on volume/frequency of use, patrons, etc. A couple/few per year and that number is dropping - virtually all are for Lawrence University. g. What is the anticipated next step or plan for expansion, if any? h. Do you think your program could be replicated in other areas in Wisconsin? Why or why not? i. What advice would you give others areas considering this type of a program? I'm supposed to respond to them by Monday so if you could let me know any thoughts you have about this by the end of the day tomorrow (Friday the 30th), I'd appreciate it. Thanks.
